California Manufacturers & Technology Association The state has 120 Legislators, over 75 Legislative policy committees, hundreds of regulatory agencies, and a never-ending political and initiative campaign cycle. Your interests will be lost without proper representation in California’s Capitol. CMTA can be the eyes, ears, pulsepoint and advocacy tool for your business in the Capitol. We sponsor, help write and push for legislation that makes it easier for manufacturers, processors, research & development, and biotech to compete and grow in California. Right now, the State’s high costs are making it too difficult to compete against the rest of the country and too many decision makers in Sacramento aren’t making it easier. We can help.
Companies in California
CMTA leads the state’s most important coalition of businesses and trade associations to provide policymakers a unified voice on proposed environmental bills and regulations. This coalition has successfully defeated or amended hundreds of harmful bills over the years. Legislators do not want their bills on our “kill” list! Leadership to Implement Global Warming Law CMTA vigorously opposed, but failed to stop California’s landmark bill to reduce and cap greenhouse gas emissions. Now we are leading the effort to ensure that implementation regulations are cost-effective and technologically feasible, as required by amendments to the legislation advocated by CMTA. With CMTA leadership, members have another chance to minimize harmful economic consequences of the bill. Preserving Workers' Compensation Reforms Skyrocketing workers compensation costs threatened to sink the California economy in 2003. CMTA helped negotiate the reform package that resulted in 40 to 70% premium reductions. Now the successful reforms are under attack by labor unions and lawyers. CMTA is on the front line to defeat bills that would undercut the reforms and increase costs. Lower Electric and Natural Gas Rates Energy costs are a major burden for manufacturers in our state. CMTA is one of the few business associations that routinely intervenes at the California Public Utilities Commission in electric and natural gas rate cases and all important energy regulatory proceedings. Before and since the energy crisis of 2001, CMTA lawyers and experts have fought for more fairness and equity in utility cost allocations, saving members millions of dollars. Competitive Tax Policies In 1993 we were successful in getting a bill passed to provide a tax credit for the purchase of manufacturing equipment. When it expired in 2004, CMTA began the long fight to restore this important feature of California tax policy. Final success has not yet been achieved. We have gained crucial bipartisan support and continue to build allies to support fair tax policies for manufacturing and technology companies in California. Education and Workforce Training CMTA co-chairs GetREAL (Relevance in Education and Learning), a business, labor, teachers and public safety coalition created to reinvigorate Career and Technical Education (CTE) in our public schools. For too long, California's education establishment has neglected the real world need to arm our high school students with the skills they will need to qualify for high quality 21st Century jobs whether they choose to directly enter the workforce or go on to postsecondary training and education. |
