June 28, 2007 The U.S. Senate failed this week to pass H.R. 800, the Employee Free Choice Act, by a vote of 51-48 (60 votes were needed). As a result, workers will retain their rights to private-ballot elections during union organizing drives. This is a major victory for employers. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and its members worked very hard, generating a massive grassroots effort against the legislation. (View NAM President John Engler's video thanking manufacturers who helped defeat the bill) And although we can take satisfaction today, the fight is not over. Organized labor and their congressional allies promise to keep bringing the card-check issue back and will make it a major issue in the 2008 campaigns. So there’s more work ahead. Both California Senators supported H.R. 800 and voted against workers’ rights. To send a customized email to Senators Boxer and Feinstein, please click here.
