For Manufacturing Day 2017, I had the pleasure of attending a tour of Dow Chemical along with 40 students from Concord High School. Together, the students and I learned about Dow’s products and operations, took a tour of the facilities, and heard from a diverse panel of Dow employees.

Dow boasts an apprenticeship program that offers high school graduates training and job experience as they are enrolled in general education courses at local colleges. On the panel of six Dow employees, two were currently in or had completed the apprenticeship program to be chemical process technicians.

Of particular interest to the students and their teacher was Dow’s solar panel roof shingles that incorporate photovoltaic technology integrated into a roof shingle or tile. The teacher expressed interest in applying this technology to their next “tiny house” project in which the students build a small, standalone home.

Dow was one of 180 events that took place across California during Manufacturing Day. These events provide an opportunity for CA based companies to demonstrate their impact in their local communities and growing California’s middle class.
