Last week, on behalf of many industry associations, CMTA submitted a letter to the Ocean Protection Council (OPC) regarding their “Priorities to Address Ocean Litter”. CMTA has been engaged on marine debris issues to ensure that our members, and the business community at large, have a seat at the table and provide meaningful input on the development of OPC’s “California Ocean Litter Prevention Strategy” document.

We believe that OPC’s priorities to address ocean litter should focus on increasing access to recycling, identifying additional infrastructure improvement that could be made, and combining these efforts with public outreach and education to reduce litter and increase recycling.

A revised Strategy document for public comment is anticipated later this month and, per OPC’s website, they expect adoption of the final Strategy by the Council at their April 2018 meeting.
