Coalition for California Jobs Launches "Jobs 1st" Campaign
Coalition is working to protect California workers from anti-jobs legislation

Sacramento, CA -- Saying, “enough is enough,” leaders of California’s business community today announced a major statewide campaign to hold legislators accountable for votes that fail to put jobs first in California. The Coalition for California Jobs’ (CCJ) “Jobs 1st”campaign will communicate with constituents about how their legislators are voting on bills that affect jobs in California and how Californians can constructively influence the retention of jobs in our state.

“Policymakers ‘talk the talk’ about protecting jobs in California, but far too often their votes don’t ‘walk the walk.’ The Jobs 1st campaign is designed to ensure that people know the voting record of their legislators on bills that affect jobs. You can’t say you’re pro-jobs and then vote for bills that kill jobs, including expanded workers’ comp benefits without cost-saving reforms, more burdensome regulations, higher taxes and fees, health care mandates, and more litigation,” said Allan Zaremberg, President of the California Chamber of Commerce. “Through Jobs 1st, we intend to hold legislators accountable for legislation that eliminates jobs or hampers job creation.”

Jobs 1st will act as a litmus test for bills affecting employers and employees. CCJ is calling on legislators to ask themselves one question on every bill that comes before them: “Does this legislation put jobs first?” CCJ urges legislators to defeat any legislation that will cost California jobs.

“It’s a simple equation - more workers on the job equals a more vibrant economy,” said Jack Stewart, President of the California Manufacturers & Technology Association. “The only solution to the state’s structural budget deficit is to create new jobs. Unfortunately, our legislature is going in the wrong direction, introducing bills that will kill jobs. Enough is enough. Constituents will hear about the effects these bills have on jobs, and when they do, they’ll let their legislators know how it impacts their families.”

According to CCJ, there are currently over 100 anti-jobs bills in the legislature. If even a handful of these harmful bills are passed, California jobs and the state’s economy will continue down the path to economic meltdown - further impacting our astronomical budget deficit. In the coming weeks, CCJ will also unveil their annual top ‘job killer’ bill list.

“To ensure that people understand the connection between an economy in downward spiral and the votes their representatives are casting in Sacramento, we intend to mount an integrated, nonpartisan, statewide communication campaign,” said Zaremberg. “Our Jobs 1st campaign will include substantial public education and grassroots activities, supported by a paid advertising component.”

The coalition also unveiled a new website www.cajobsfirst.org , which once it is fully operational in the next two weeks will be used to give the public current information on the voting records of their legislators. It will also contain the tools needed to communicate voter concerns.

CCJ is a broad-based coalition led by the California Chamber of Commerce, California Business Roundtable, California Manufacturers & Technology Association, California Taxpayers Association
