State Manufacturers Commend Governor's Initiative
Bolstering School Construction Plans
SACRAMENTO -- The California Manufacturers and Technology
Association president, Jack M. Stewart, released the following
statement today regarding Governor Davis' School Improvement
and Accountability Act.
"There is hardly another issue as important to our K-12
schools than infrastructure funding. Building new classrooms,
reducing class size, and improving the safety of our schools
is imperative to the successful education of California's children."
By reducing the vote requirement to pass local school bonds
from the stringent two-thirds majority to 55 percent, this initiative
seeks to allow each community to evaluate their school facilities'
needs and approve or reject school bonds as local voters deem
appropriate.
Added Stewart, "While protecting taxpayers with a 55%
majority and implementing stringent accountability standards,
the School and Improvement and Accountability Act will empower
local voters with realistic opportunities to pass school bonds."
