The Greening of California, Nov. 14-15, 2006
Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina

CMTA's Environmental Conference, "The Greening of California," will be held next  Tuesday and Wednesday, November 14 and 15, at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina (Harbor Island).  This is the Fifth Annual Statewide Environmental and Regulatory Issues Conference put on jointly with the Industrial Environmental Association (IEA), a Southern California regional organization.

Many top government officials and business leaders will speak on a wide variety of environmental topics important to your business planning for the future.  In addition to the tracks mentioned below, presentations will discuss day-to-day practical information you can use to incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly practices into your facilities and operations.

Tuesday's sessions will be divided into three tracks which will run simultaneously: Air Quality, Hazardous Material, and Water Quality.  Dr. Robert Sawyer, Chairman of the Air Resources Board, will lead the Air Quality.  While much of the track will focus upon the implementation of the new climate change legislation, emerging issues will also be discussed by such knowledgeable speakers as EPA Region IX director, Deborah Jordan.

Maureen Gorsen, Director of the California Department of Toxic Substance Control, and Dr. Michael Wilson, UC Berkeley author of "Green Chemistry in California: a Framework for Leadership in Chemicals Policy and Innovation" (a report to the California legislature), are among the noted speakers in the Hazardous Materials track.  Besides chemical management and pending Green Chemistry legislation, topics like spill release reporting, CUPA (The Certified Unified Program Agencies) changes, producer responsibility and universal waste will be discussed.

The Water Quality Track will focus primarily on stormwater issues but also brief us on pending regulations and contemplated legislation.  Gerald Secundy, Vice Chairman of the State Water Resources Control Board and recently-announced new President of CEEB (California Council for Environmental and Economic Balance), will speak about the State's water quality priorities.

The highlight of the luncheon on Tuesday will be the presentation of environmental responsibility awards to a few worthy California companies.  A couple of CMTA member companies will be among the recipients.  In addition, Admiral Leendert Hering, Commander of Navy Southwest Region, will be honored with the Community Sustainability Award in recognition of his leadership in the formation of the San Diego Regional Sustainability Partnership.

There will also be three simultaneous tracks on Wednesday: Legislative and Regulatory, Biotechnology, and a Compliance Update specifically for Plating Shops and Metal Finishing. Hear a summary of happenings for the past year and what to expect in 2007 in the Legislature with Kip Lipper of Senate Speaker pro Tempore Don Perata's office, Greg Maw from the Senate Republican Caucus, and Patty Zwarts of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

A "best ball" golf tournament will be offered following the conference on Wednesday afternoon on the beautiful Coronado Municipal Course.
