On May 19th, the Senate Appropriations Committee will consider SB 1608 (Ellen Corbett, D-San Leandro), a bipartisan comprehensive reform measure designed to promote and increase compliance with state and federal civil rights laws providing for equal access for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations and to reduce unwarranted, unnecessary litigation that does not advance the goals of disability access.

SB 1608 seeks to reduce the amount of lawsuits designed to extort settlement money from businesses under the guise of equal access.  All too often, the result has been that "good actors" look to other regions to do business.

The business community has both a vested interest and responsibility to comply with disability access laws. At the same time, California’s laws should facilitate and acknowledge the efforts of the large majority of all California businesses that comply and take the appropriate steps. SB 1608 attempts to strike a fair and reasonable balance.
