Newly-appointed Assembly Speaker Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) has named Assemblywoman Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) as the next chair of the Budget Committee and Assemblyman Kevin De Leon (D-Los Angeles) as the next chair of the Appropriations Committee – two of the most influential positions in the Assembly.  Although they have been chosen to lead the two key fiscal committees, they will not begin their chairmanships until the end of the year when current chairs, Assemblymen John Laird (D-Santa Cruz), of the Budget Committee, and Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), of the Appropriations Committee, leave office due to term limits.

Bass has also named Assemblywoman Lori Saldana (D-San Diego) as Assistant Speaker pro Tempore.

In addition, Assemblyman Curren Price (D-Inglewood) has been promoted to chairman of the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee.  Price is replacing Assemblyman Alberto Torrico (D- Fremont) who has been appointed to Assembly Majority Floor Leader.  It is likely that Price will step down from his current position as chairman of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee, leaving another vacancy for Bass to fill.
