Two laws signed by Governor Schwarzenegger last year will provide the foundation for advancing the California Green Chemistry Initiative. SB 509 (Joe Simitian, D- Palo Alto, Chapter 560) and AB 1879 (Mike Feuer, D-Los Angeles, Chapter 559) are first steps in developing the information on toxic chemicals by providing information about chemicals in consumer products.

Chapter 559 directs the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to develop regulations that create a process for identifying and prioritizing chemicals of concern, and to create methods for analyzing alternatives to existing hazardous chemicals. It also allows DTSC to take certain actions following an assessment that range from "no action" to "restrictions or bans."

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) has set tentative dates for Green Chemistry and AB 1879 Implementation Workshops as follows:

•    February 18 in Berkeley
•    February 26 in Chatsworth
•    March 17 in Sacramento

Another workshop scheduled for April 1st in Sacramento will be in conjunction with the first meeting of the Green Chemistry Science Advisory Panel.
