Trial lawyers, environmentalists and other special interests are putting extraordinary pressure on legislators and the Governor to pass their expensive, ill-conceived and damaging bills. The possible election of a Republican governor means this could be the last chance to get what they want for years to come. Unless we see a show of strength by moderate legislators, the liberal majority will likely give them most, if not all, of what they want. Governor Davis may be our last chance to kill these bills. He needs your help to make the best decisions possible for the state of California.

This year more than ever, it is crucial that facts about the impact of bad legislation gets to the Governor as soon as possible. Letters should include, if at all possible, specific and quantifiable estimates of impact from the legislation under consideration. Actions you may take if certain bills take effect, information about the role of your company in California, the number of employees, your contribution to the tax base in the local community, is helpful. You should encourage the highest level person in your company to sign the letter. Detailed letters and phone calls from your CEO to the Governor may prompt additional staff work to put more information into the decision-making process.

The politics of recall have created greater risks than ever before for the California economy. It is sad but true that last minute power plays, jam jobs and wholesale abuse of the process are typical in the California legislature. Stay alert to the mischief, prepare your executives to take action when necessary, and donít miss a chance to make a difference.
