Opportunity knocking: Redistricting maps open doors to Congress

A draft congressional map released earlier this month by the state’s bipartisan redistricting panel has ushered forth a parade of up-and-coming lawmakers eager to launch campaigns – in some cases taking on prominent longtime incumbents.  More than a dozen candidates have emerged, including current officeholders like State Senator Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) and State Assemblyman Isadore Hall (D-Los Angeles), as well as lesser-known hopefuls like Bob Nascenzi (D), a wealthy marketing executive and political newcomer.

It’s the opening shot in what is certain to be a dramatic transformation in the nation’s largest congressional delegation. The California Citizens Redistricting Commission blueprint is set to unravel a decades-long gerrymander that has provided nearly unparalleled security for the state’s incumbents, and is already enticing newcomers ready to unleash their bottled-up ambitions.
