The Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) announced the expansion of California's Innovation Hub (iHub) Program with the designation of four new centers around the state. The iHub Program is designed to enhance the state’s national and global competitiveness by stimulating partnerships, economic development, and job creation around specific research clusters. Currently, the program supports 12 regional centers statewide.

One of the new iHub designations is a statewide manufacturing center. As described in the GO-Biz press release, "The California Network for Manufacturing Innovation (CNMI) is designed as a statewide collaborative of National Research Laboratories, MEPs, academic institutions, Economic Development organizations, manufacturers and equipment suppliers to support and foster advanced manufacturing in California. CNMI is designed as a one stop organization for Small and Medium-Sized Manufacturers (SMMs) to secure workforce development, technology transfer, and improvement services throughout California. CNMI will have operations in Torrance and the Bay Area."

In referencing this expansion, GO-Biz Director Kish Rajan stated, "These new initiatives bring together key resources to support manufacturing, aerospace, defense, energy, healthcare, agribusiness, and more.  This allows regions all over the state to better capitalize on new technologies and support homegrown start-up businesses that create the bulk of California’s new jobs."

The announcement comes only days after Governor Brown signed AB 250 by Assembly Member Chris Holden (D-Pasadena) to formally acknowledge the iHub program in statute and establish an account to collect and disburse private funds for startups working with the centers.  CMTA did not take a position on this bill.
