Assembly Speaker John Pérez (D-Los Angeles) has officially announced his intention to run for State Controller.  Although Perez had previously shared his intent to seek the office with his Democratic colleagues, he was clear that he also intended to remain Speaker through the middle of 2014.  While the field has yet to be finalized, it appears that Perez will run against Board of Equalization member Betty Yee, who was running without opposition until Pérez’s announcement.

As Speaker of the Assembly, Pérez has raised over $2.7 million spread among three campaign committees, much of which is eligible to be transferred to his race for Controller.  In comparison, Yee had a mere $471,000 at the June 30th filing.  Political insiders have also suggested the potential for former state Treasurer Phil Angelides to throw his hat in the ring, particularly as he has sought in recent years an opportunity to re-enter elective office following his 2006 gubernatorial race defeat to Schwarzenegger.  Insiders have suggested that while a late entry by Angelides could be a disadvantage him, he has run statewide three times and has an extensive network and name recognition that Pérez and Yee have yet to garner.
