Assemblyman Fabian Nez (D-Los Angeles) was sworn in, Monday, February 9th as the state Assembly's 66th speaker. While Nez, 37, the son of Mexican immigrants, pledged to build bipartisan cooperation, he said the Democratic-controlled Assembly would not meet the Republican Governor's request for workers' compensation reform by March 1 and a budget deal in May. Nez said the Assembly would meet the state constitution's June 15 budget deadline and workers' compensation reform would take more than a few weeks to sort out.

As leader of the 80-member Assembly body, Nez will set committee assignments, oversee the house's legislative work and serve as key negotiator on the state budget. In his address, Nez called for trimming the size of legislative committees by as much as one-third and renewing efforts to tackle the state's energy problems.

Speaker Nez has already announced several new chairs to the Assembly's committees of interest to manufacturers and technology companies:

* Appropriations Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park) to replace Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento)
* Budget Steinberg to replace Jenny Oropeza (D-Long Beach)
* Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services Mervyn Dymally (D-Compton) to replace Chu
* Health Rebecca Cohn (D-Saratoga) to replace Dario Frommer (D-Los Angeles)
* Revenue and Taxation Rudy Bermudez (D-Norwalk) to replace Ed Chavez (D-La Puente)
* Transportation Oropeza to replace John Dutra (D-Fremont)

A new leadership team has additionally been appointed to aid the Speaker:

* Rules Committee Chair Cindy Montanez (D-San Fernando)
* Majority Whip Lloyd Levine (D-Van Nuys)
