California Manufacturers & Technology Association President, Jack Stewart, made the following statement regarding Gov. Schwarzenegger's State of the State address on Wednesday, January 5:

"We applaud Governor Schwarzenegger for his commitment to finishing the job he came to Sacramento to do and fight special interests to reform California government and grow jobs.

Only by continuing to improve the business climate will California attract new investment and fuel economic growth. We look forward to working with the Governor to identify and address the most serious problems still facing manufacturers in the state, such as high electricity rates, imposition of sales tax on the purchase of manufacturing equipment, and inflexible labor rules.

Governor Schwarzenegger has correctly identified that the state has a spending, not a revenue problem. We applaud his commitment to not raise taxes, to incur no additional borrowing and to protect special funds from further raids. Only by reforming government pensions, protecting transportation and education funding, including a renewed emphasis on vocational education, will the state grow into the economic powerhouse it should be in the 21st century."
