It would be an understatement to call the year 2005 "challenging." The threat and then reality of a special election diverted the attention of lawmakers from the pressing problems of manufacturers and other members of the business community. In this difficult atmosphere, CMTA tried, but was unable to restore the sales tax exemption for new investments in manufacturing or to get relief from overtime laws that disadvantage round-the-clock operations. However, we were able to stop many overly burdensome environmental bills and prevent new fees or taxes on manufacturers.

The good news is that the legislative leadership is becoming more aware of the value of manufacturing to the California economy. Your companies are innovative, environmentally sensitive and technologically advanced. Your workers are the most productive in the world. To help spread the word in 2006, CMTA will use our new "Manufacturers Leading the Way" program to highlight the high wages, tremendous wealth-creation and social responsibility of California’s manufacturers. Each quarter a CMTA company will be portrayed in a piece to be delivered to all legislators, regulators and the press.

Thank you for your participation in CMTA. I look forward to working with you in 2006. Together we can help restore California’s manufacturing engine, offering high quality employment to millions of new Californians in the years to come.
