Last week, SB 504 (Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont) was amended to become a study bill on the risks to children who consume synthetic food dyes. The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessments is to review scientific literature on the issues. A previous version of the bill required that foods with synthetic food dyes be labeled with a warning about the effects of food dyes on children’s behavior. One sample warning read: “WARNING: Dyes in this food may trigger hyperactivity and other behavioral problems in some children.”

With these amendments, CMTA will remove opposition but will continue to monitor.

SB 504 will be heard in the Senate Health Committee next Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
