CalRecycle will host its next Packaging Reform Workshop on September 19 from 1:30 pm to 4 pm in Sacramento. In late July, CalRecycle released its “Draft Screening Criteria for Determining Priority Packaging Types” allowing for public comment and feedback.

CMTA and a broad coalition submitted comments last week, highlighting a few key points:

1. CalRecycle’s approach and the draft criteria place an undue focus on consumer products packaging, when the single largest category of the waste stream is comprised of organic waste (food waste);

2. Industry is committed to environmental stewardship and continues to invest in efforts to reduce the overall environmental footprint of packaging; and

3. Efforts should be taken to increase collection and recovery, increase consumer participation, and improve material separation with consumers and at the processing level.

The coalition letter can be viewed here and more information on the workshop can be accessed here.
