On Tuesday, January 9th, State Senator Toni Atkins received the support of her colleagues to become the next leader of the California State Senate succeeding the current Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León. Senator Atkins will formally take over on March 21st.

Representing portions of San Diego County, Senator Atkins’ district is home to a number of manufacturers, including CMTA members Solar Turbines (a Caterpillar Company) and Pfizer amongst others. Total manufacturing employment in the district exceeds 30,000 employees.

Senator Atkins will hold a special position in California’s history of legislative leadership as she will be only the third Californian to hold the positions of the Speaker of the Assembly and Senate Pro Tem. (James T. Farley and Ransom Burnell did so back in the mid-1800’s). Perhaps most appropriate given the current challenges facing the Legislature and society in general, she will also be the first and openly LGBTQ Californian to lead the Senate in California’s 167-year history.

CMTA congratulates Senator Atkins in her continued leadership in the California State Legislature.
